In the past decade, seaweed production has boomed as researchers and investors eye its climate potential. Yet alongside seaweed’s promise, there are pitfalls. @ConservationOrg Ventures investee @coast4c is working to change that. https://t.co/wd4TycbkCV
WHY do we do #regenerative#seaweed#aquaculture? The answer is in the 4Cs. One is #Conservation. #Sharks are under huge threat. If they go the whole #bluefood system we ALL depend on collapses. Seaweed can help restore the ocean-but ONLY if done right. Which is one of our WHYs.
@HeatherKoldewey This is a great reminder that we should never underestimate the social and cultural values of livelihoods - often bigger (or at least equal) drivers of behaviour than economic value. Those seeking to "modernise" the #seaweed industry and #conserve the #ocean should take note!
"Farming seaweeds is like looking for what you don't have in life. If you are stressed because of family and kids, you can go to your farm and you can find joy, especially when your seaweeds are growing well...". 'Magic Marge' sums up her love for seaweed farming!
Excited to have shipped 24,750kg of #seaweed over the weekend! Much of this was trapped following super typhoon #Odette and has now been freed, allowing us to continue investing in #regenerative seaweed practices to #rebuild#livelihoods of those most affected by Odette
Plenty of time to pick up some wild #seaweed and #urchin for lunch on the boat whilst we're out searching for wild Kappaphycus breeding stock with our advisor and collaborator Prof Maikee. Seafood at its best....
Wonderful to be back in the Philippines FINALLY, and #thankyou to @GracieGW and Jennifer for your time and energy discussing how to build a #sustainable and #inclusive#seaweed industry!
We are honoured to have been selected as winner of the #BlueEconomy Initiative Award at the Island Innovation Awards! #Thankyou to @IslandsInnovate, @ClintonGlobal and everyone involved for celebrating this amazing set of diverse projects for the 12 awards! #OceanOptimism
Fish are amazing - especially #seahorses!
Fun to feature in sharing these extraordinary fishy facts and a conservation message with @NatGeo featuring @projectseahorse@ZSLMarine and @coast4c. Saving seahorses helps save the seas.
How seahorses are a fish but also so un-fish-like - awesome interview with our board member, founder of @projectseahorse and NatGeo Explorer @HeatherKoldewey, also covering our value chain for end-of-life fishing nets https://t.co/334Ucn48NJ via @NatGeo. @ECONYL@InterfaceInc
Our Ocean Innovator, @coast4c, has recently secured a $500,000 investment from Conservation International Ventures LLC.

@coast4c helps local fishing communities in the Philippines learn how to farm and sell seaweed; a vital ingredient in food and cosmetics as well as bioplastics. This helps them become more resilient to climate change, restore the marine ecosystem and lock carbon in the ocean.
This start-up is turning fishers into climate champions by using the latest tech and rewarding them for using regenerative methods.

Whilst we have been entirely focused on catastrophic Supertyphoon Rai (#Odette) in the Philippines (more on that soon), great paper from our Blue Carbon Research Associate @whereisklara. Odette highlights the urgency to increase #mangrove#regeneration of abandoned coastal lands
In the Philippines, @Coast4C saw an opportunity to align seaweed farming with Marine Protected Areas – improving local livelihoods and biodiversity. Nick Hill explains how in our podcast #InvestingForOceanImpact:
