Imagine reversing the Lindsay Clancy case.

Imagine the father is the one on trial.

His wife has struggled for years with depression, suicidal thoughts, psychiatric problems, and the exhausting demands of raising three young children.

Then he begins deteriorating mentally too.

He becomes severely depressed. He becomes psychotic. He hears voices, develops delusions, and loses touch with reality.

One day, while his wife is gone, he kills all three of their children.

He admits it.

His lawyers don't claim someone else did it. They argue that he was severely mentally ill and was not criminally responsible in the ordinary sense.

Now be honest.

Would the same people currently overflowing with compassion for Lindsay Clancy be extending that same compassion to him?

Would they be posting about how the mental-health system failed this poor father?

Would they explain that psychosis can make a loving parent do something completely alien to the person they normally are?

Would they say, "The real him didn't do this"?

Would they urge his devastated wife to understand that he was sick?

Would they angrily correct anyone who called him a monster?

Or would they call him exactly that?

I suspect we already know the answer.

And before anyone reaches for the obvious escape hatch - "Men don't get postpartum psychosis" - he doesn't need to.

Give him schizophrenia.

Give him bipolar disorder with psychotic features.

Give him severe depression with psychosis.

Give him any legitimate psychiatric condition capable of producing the same profound break with reality.

The diagnosis does not have to be identical.

The degree of psychiatric impairment does.

So strip the case down.

Same three dead children.

Same confession.

Same severe mental illness.

Same psychosis.

Same hallucinations or delusions.

Same psychiatric experts.

Same argument that the defendant was no longer perceiving reality normally.

Now change one variable.

Make the killer their father.

Does the compassion remain?

Because if severe mental illness can alter criminal responsibility for a mother, then comparable mental illness has to be capable of altering criminal responsibility for a father too.

You don't get to invoke psychosis as a profound destroyer of judgment for one sex and then suddenly rediscover free will when the defendant is male.

If your compassion disappears when the mother's face is replaced with the father's, then maybe your position was never entirely about mental illness.

P.S. Fathers can also develop what is commonly called paternal postpartum or postnatal depression.

Obviously, men don't experience pregnancy, childbirth, or the same postpartum hormonal changes. But new fathers can develop serious depression associated with sleep deprivation, stress, relationship strain, financial pressure, and the enormous psychological adjustment of caring for a newborn.

Meta-analyses put paternal perinatal depression at roughly 8 to 10%, against roughly 10 to 15% for mothers.

So even the claim that postpartum depression is exclusively a female phenomenon doesn't hold up very well.
