Solutions:
1. Chronic condition peer work roles, offering young people understanding, guidance and support.
2. Case coordinators in youth mental health services, supporting connected care between services.
3. A youth health credential, building expertise in holistic youth care.
We’ve all seen it — young people juggling chronic physical conditions and mental ill-health, navigating a system that doesn't always connect the dots.
Young people, academics, health professionals & NFPs came together for an @orygen_aus Policy Lab to develop three key solutions:
1 in 10 young Australians experience both mental ill-health and physical conditions or chronic pain, but these health needs are often treated in isolation.
To help integrate care, an Orygen-convened Policy Lab workshop has delivered 3 key recommendations: https://t.co/HpLn9nndaO

That’s according to new analysis from the 2023 @MissionAust Youth Survey of more than 19,000 young people in Australia 🧵

Findings from 18,800 young Australians: climate concerns are common and associated with psychological distress. Need targeted research funding, climate in youth/MH policies and opportunities for young people to design next steps. @carolinexgao@ShuMeiTeo@KateFilia@MissionAust

Young people tell us that youth peer work makes a big difference to their care. Great to hear @magenta_simmons and @rafiunfc discuss the experiences and needs of the workforce, who still require much more support for implementation and growth #iaymh2022
On climate-related mental ill-health in young people: “mental health services and organisations must take action to be part of the solution” - @IsabelZbukvic #iaymh2022
Young parents are disproportionately impacted by mental ill-health and mental health risk factors. Rather than navigate both perinatal and youth mental health services to address their needs, they deserve the right care at the right time. Tune in to tomorrow's report launch!
Perinatal #MentalHealth week begins next week (7-13 Nov). To coincide with this, Orygen and @PANDAaustralia have partnered to help the community better understand perinatal mental illness. Join us online on 10 Nov. Register here: https://t.co/XcIZuTogIa
"It is about time that we really listened to what young people with lived experience want and need, and worked together with them to make it happen." Adequate funding and dedicated resources are a must. Great work, @magenta_simmons! https://t.co/xFADnLeSGi
"When I asked for help... there was no help available for me. It's all well and good to tell someone to ask for help, but what happens when you ask and there is no answer?" - Amelia Morris. So deeply thankful to people sharing their experiences of the MH system #RCMentalHealth
