92% of the 28M people struggling with alcohol overuse don’t get any form of help. Millions are being left behind by a system that’s reactive, rigid and one size fits all.
We’re fixing this. Today I’m excited to introduce you to Sunnyside Med by @joinsunnyside, a new program that pairs our proven behavior change system with compounded naltrexone, a medication for reducing alcohol use.
With Sunnyside Med we’ll do to alcohol what GLP1s have done for weight loss - dramatically open access to medication that takes willpower out of the equation.
Like in weight, the winner here will be the one who delivers the best end to end experience. That’s us.
After 5 years building Sunnyside, and more than half a million engaged members, we know what works when it comes to alcohol habit change. We’ve built an incredible companion experience where medication is just one part of a comprehensive whole. It’s an entirely new path that’s been long overdue.
I wrote a (much longer) version of the strategy behind the launch on the Sunnyside blog. Check the replies to read on.
Great analysis. Important not to forget the behavioral side of addiction treatment. Like in weight loss, the best results will come from the pairing of medication with structured habit change interventions. We’ve built this at @joinsunnyside!

"I just lied to my doctor.. again." I love this post from @DabTheInk - it's too real! 😆
In your last annual checkup, did your doctor ask you about your drinking? How did you respond?
When we aren't feeling great about how much we're drinking, it's easy to deflect the question or underreport. But if we can't talk to our doctors about drinking, how do we get help when we need it?
If the annual checkup is the only path to access clinical support for changing drinking habits, each time we shrug the question we close the window of access to care for another year.
We can do better than this!
Sunnyside Med by @joinsunnyside makes access to alcohol habit change, including medication for drinking less (when appropriate), available 100% online.
No more awkward doctor conversations as a gatekeeper to getting started. No longer limited to one opportunity each year. And with an approach that's flexible based on individual goals vs. shoving sobriety down your throat.
So if this sounds familiar, and you're feeling the inkling to make a change, our front door is always open.
@willahmed this was a great read, thanks for sharing! I’m curious: how do you see specific habit change interventions fitting into the OS? For example, for someone struggling with alcohol overuse, how do the proactive biometric indicators then activate a structured program for breaking ingrained habits? For some the data alone may be enough, but for others I imagine more hands on digital intervention will be necessary. I’d love to hear your thoughts!

@JoeVennare Awesome thread! I see alcohol going the way of sugar and saturated fats. We know they aren’t great for us, but most of us don’t cut out entirely. Instead it’s about balance! This is our guiding philosophy at @joinsunnyside - tools to help with mindful alcohol consumption 🍻
@SmithDanaG@KQEDForum Really important piece, thank you for writing it! I’d love to connect to share more about what we’re up to @joinsunnyside - helping people minimize the negative impacts of drinking without necessarily quitting entirely. We need more options for those looking to make a change!
@omooretweets We’ve had great success with this at @joinsunnyside with the launch of our $300/year premium coaching plan. Great way to better match the value we deliver with customer need and willingness to pay!
@JoeVennare Just like with sugar and junk food, I’d argue the complete abstinence approach isn’t the right fit for a lot of people. Going all or nothing (think super restrictive diets) can be a lot harder to sustain vs. simply being mindful and intentional about when and how much we consume.
