Scene 09 — Under Discipline
The room is small and austere. Rough walls, a bare concrete floor, no furniture. Only a steel ring set deep into the wall defines its purpose. This is not a place of impulse or excess. Discipline here follows procedure.
A young inmate kneels close to the wall. She wears a light vintage leather skirt and a satin blouse, now creased and visibly out of place in this setting. Her hands are restrained behind her back with standard police handcuffs. Around her neck is a metal restraint, connected by a short chain to the steel ring. The chain is not fully taut, but it clearly limits her movement.
Her posture is subdued. Head lowered slightly, shoulders drawn in. Her expression reflects restraint rather than panic. She does not resist, nor does she plead. This moment is the consequence of a violation, understood even if not spoken aloud.
Beside her stands a guard, leaning against the same wall. Her stance is closed, controlled, authoritative. She holds a baton in one hand, not raised, not brandished. Simply present. Her expression suggests reprimand rather than rage. What is being enforced here is order, not emotion.
The scene captures a regulated response within the institution. A measured act of discipline, carried out according to rule, not impulse. The system does not ask for submission. It requires compliance.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The Iron Ward is an artistic visual project that leads the viewer into the environment of a fictional women’s prison in France in the year 1946.
This is not a narrative in the traditional sense. The project does not follow individual stories, nor does it seek resolution or judgment. Instead, it presents a carefully curated series of selected scenes that collectively depict daily life inside an institution governed by order, hierarchy, and procedure.
The images portray routine moments and controlled situations within the prison: intake and inspection processes, temporary holding spaces, administrative offices, cells, corridors, work assignments, communal areas, and regulated daily activities. These scenes are not arranged as a linear storyline but function as isolated observations, fragments of an institutional reality.
A defining feature of this prison is the mandatory use of restraints. All incarcerated women are required to wear restraints as part of the institutional regime. Handcuffs worn in front of the body are presented as a privilege, granted under specific conditions and revoked when necessary. The distinction between restraint positions reflects status, behavior, and compliance within the system.
The prison staff is composed exclusively of women. Guards and officers are portrayed as confident, authoritative figures, often dressed in a range of leather uniforms and tailored variations appropriate to their roles. Their appearance reinforces hierarchy and control while remaining grounded in a stylized but disciplined aesthetic consistent with the post-war era.
Discipline within the institution follows a defined protocol. Punishments and restrictions are not arbitrary, emotional, or driven by personal gratification. They are applied according to rules, procedures, and formal responses to infractions. The project deliberately avoids depictions of gratuitous cruelty, sadism, or humiliation for pleasure. Authority here is institutional, not personal.
The Iron Ward does not explore the guilt or innocence of the women held within its walls. Legal context, crimes, and moral judgment remain outside the scope of the work. The focus lies instead on structure, routine, control, and the psychological atmosphere created by confinement and regulation.
This project is a work of stylized fantasy realism. While the setting is fictional, all visual elements are grounded in the aesthetics, materials, and social atmosphere of the mid-1940s. Modern elements are excluded. The tone remains observational, restrained, and deliberate.
This first volume marks an initial entry into the world of The Iron Ward. Future volumes will return to this institution, continuing to explore its spaces, routines, and dynamics through new selected scenes.
