2025 Cal Baseball Roster

Prior to the 2025 season, each position group will be interviewed and previewed. First up, let's meet our catchers and have a look at this year's group.
The bar for playing catcher at Cal has been set extremely high by those who have played the position for the Golden Bears over the years including a pair of first-round draft picks in the last six seasons in current Chicago White Sox backstop Korey Lee, who was selected by the Houston Astros in 2019, and Caleb Lomavita of the Washington Nationals (2024). Lomavita held down the starting job the past two seasons so Cal will have a new starter in 2025. Alex Birge has transferred to Cal from Wichita State after being a part-time starter at catcher and designated hitter for the Shockers in 2024. Birge will be given a long look at the position along with returnees Nico Button and Ryan Tayman. Button is one of only three position players in his fourth season on the Bears’ roster and made his biggest contribution in 2024 when he hit .313 with a home run and nine RBI in 17 games played and 12 starts. Tayman showed the pop in his bat as a 2024 rookie at Cal with six homers in only 67 at bats (one HR every 11.67 AB) and also had a .254 batting average and 11 RBI. Freshman Kalen Applefield was a second-team All-San Diego selection who hit .333 with four homers as a 2024 senior at La Costa Canyon HS in Carlsbad.
With their 4th-round pick (No. 104 overall), the @Athletics select @CalBaseball outfielder Rodney Green, No. 132 on the Top 250 Draft Prospects list.
