I can’t find a figure for the average consultant pay, but for clarity, NHS consultants start on 88k, breaching 100k after 5 years.
So assuming no gaps in training, it takes a minimum of 14 years (including university) to become a medical consultant. This is typically longer 8/?

Furthermore, why are we comparing doctors to the average wage like this? Being a doctor is not the average job. Our training is highly competitive and rigorous, the responsibility and skill we hold is huge. This is not an average career. 7/?

CPI vs RPI. Of course the government prefers to use CPI for it’s spending, it means that it pays less out. Yet when it comes to the interest rate on our loans, the government uses RPI. We’ll start comparing using CPI when our loans increase based on CPI. Cheers! 5/?

Firstly, we get to this graph. The dark blue here is accurate. The light blue is an estimate of extra pay from nights/extra hours. Naturally, they have used the upper bounds of what is typical. Here they have put 38k for an FY1, the average is actually 32k. 2/?

It's anyone who is not yet a Consultant.

I was 38, with 20 years of medical training and experience, a PhD, a father, and with a mortgage to pay.

And I was still called a "junior doctor"
