At age 11, Adam Devine was hit by a 42-ton cement truck and spent two weeks in a coma. He underwent 26 surgeries, and doctors doubted he would walk again.

After being bullied because of his injuries, he discovered that making people laugh helped him cope, ultimately inspiring his career in comedy.

In 1995, 11-year-old Adam DeVine waited for three cement trucks to pass before crossing a road in Omaha on his bike, and never saw the fourth, which struck him while he was in the street.

The 42-ton truck's first two wheels rolled over him and dragged him 500 feet.

He fell into a coma and woke up two weeks later. Every bone in both legs was broken, the skin ripped from them, his lung collapsed, ribs broken, infections setting in.

Doctors weren't sure if he'd walk again, or whether his legs would have to be amputated.

It was discovered that the only reason he survived at all was that his bicycle absorbed the initial impact.

"They say the reason I lived was the bike took the hit first. I still slid 500 feet. Picked me up under the first two wheels and then spit me out," DeVine later said.

Over the next two years, he underwent 26 surgeries. "It was really tough because I had to relearn how to walk, stand up, sit up and everything. The legs were totally mangled," he said.

Then, when he returned to school, the bullying began. He'd been a kid with dreams of being a professional baseball player.

That future was gone. So he found a different defense.

He started telling jokes to deflect attention from his injuries, and discovered comedy could bring people together instead of pushing them apart.

He spent his recovery time calling local radio stations to perform celebrity impressions on air.

"I'm glad that it happened to me. It really gave me a driving force," DeVine later reflected.
