The reason the mayor has to ask everybody to set their thermostat to 78° is because we don’t have real price signals in electricity.
You get overcharged for 99% of the year to subsidize peak demand.
This destroys the profitability of insulation, efficient HVAC, home batteries, etc.
Since prices don’t reflect real costs, we get pleading and rationing instead of smart investment.
Shortages are a result of the socialism that is ubiquitous in electricity. NYC is not unique in this.

A fact that still blows my mind:
