More than 1 billion teeth around the world have been filled with a material that one woman invented.

The reason it looks like a real tooth instead of a repair is that the particles inside it are smaller than light.

Her name is Sumita Mitra.

She was born in India in 1949. Her father was a chemist. As a child she used to go to his laboratory and stand behind him watching him work, and that is where chemistry got hold of her.

She went to the United States, joined the company 3M, and ended up in its dental products laboratory.

In the late 1990s she looked at the problem with tooth fillings.

The white fillings dentists had then came with a trade off. The ones strong enough for the back teeth, where you actually chew, looked wrong. The ones that looked good went dull quickly and could not take the force of biting.

So a dentist had to choose between a filling that lasted and a filling that looked like your tooth.

At the same time, nanotechnology was becoming a serious field. She had an idea nobody in dentistry was working on.

Here is the science, and it is simple once you see it.

Visible light travels in waves. When light hits a particle bigger than its own wavelength, it scatters, and scattered light is what makes a material look cloudy or dull.

Nanoparticles are smaller than the wavelength of visible light. Light does not scatter off them. It passes through.

So a filling made of nanoparticles can look like enamel, because it handles light the way enamel does.

Her first attempt failed. She made tiny particles of several sizes, and the material did not handle properly. Dentists could not work with it.

She worked out why. To pack together into something strong, the particles needed a wide range of sizes, not a few. So she and her team built linked clusters of nanoparticles, which they called nanoclusters, and mixed those with single particles of different diameters.

That worked. It was strong, it took a polish, it held that polish, and by adding tiny amounts of pigment they could make it in shades that matched a person's own teeth.

It was launched in 2002.

It has now been used in more than 1 billion tooth restorations.

She holds over 100 patents. In 1998 3M elected her to its Carlton Society, the highest research honour the company gives. She retired in 2010. In 2021 the European Patent Office gave her the European Inventor Award. She is in the United States National Inventors Hall of Fame.

Most people who have one of her fillings in their mouth right now have never heard her name.

She has said what the work was for. The use of nanotechnology gave me the opportunity of making a new material. It restores people's smiles and improves the quality of their lives.

Why are all my BJP friends in a tizzy because of my remark? Yes, our economy is doing well but India's overall debt is not a happy occurrence. Foolish of anyone to defend this! It's embarrassing for a scientist to explain commonsensical economics but here goes (pardon rough and approx figures as writing on the go):

1. India’s public debt is not some ₹270 lakh crore irrelevant figure; the Centre alone owes about ₹201 lakh crore. Add the states and general-government debt is over 80% of GDP, far above the old FRBM ceilings of 40% (Centre) and 60% (Centre plus states) that were supposed to be hit by FY25. Interest already takes 40% of the Centre’s revenue; the FY27 bill is budgeted above ₹14 lakh crore. That is not a footnote. It is the first charge on every tax rupee.

2. The Centre has at least tried to put a share of borrowing into capex. The states have not, uniformly. A growing slice of state borrowing is paying for salaries, power subsidies and unconditional cash transfers; twelve states alone set aside about ₹2 lakh crore for women-centric cash schemes in FY26, not for assets that service the debt. Several high-debt states are, in effect, borrowing to give money away.

3. India is not America. It has no reserve currency, a still-narrow income-tax base, and cannot roll deficits the way the dollar can. Most of the debt is domestic and rupee-denominated, so this is not a classic external-debt crisis. It is a compound-interest and politics problem. Fast nominal growth can shrink the ratio for a while; it cannot indefinitely outrun a 40% interest-to-revenue claim plus election giveaways.

4. If growth slows, the interest bill, state deficits and crowding-out of private credit will produce something problematic: higher real rates, less room for capex, and a fiscal vise that closes just when the next shock arrives.

5. So let us be sensible. Praise the govt for its good policies and be critical of the things that are not right and need to be set right.

6. And @pradip103 and @MumbaichaDon, my brothers, I don't do monkey balancing. And I don't make reels as I am not on Instagram, never have been. So please don't get personal - arguments are never won through getting personal.

You will see the China aligned GLISCO-DS (based out of the US) advised parties in India always come out at the forefront of these protests too.

I kindly request Indian media to talk more about such psyop operations. This news, this finding by X and US govt, more such findings before on how such influence operations are run, need to be told to the country.

Indian Govt too needs to preempt this at the infowar level. Or it will become protests hitting India's streets soon against development, data centers, and strategic infra turned into protests against PM Modi and our strategic companies.

I had filed an RTI with the Uttarakhand Forest Department on the mass killing order issued against leopards and bears. The reply is still pending.
The only really complicated aspect of this case, as I see it, is this: the order came at a time when human deaths were already in the news. The department’s own confidential internal report itself says that capturing these animals, or even killing them, has not reduced the attacks. Then why was permission granted for mass killing?
Scientifically, the sequence should have been the opposite. First identify the individual animal. Then fit a radio collar and map the hotspots. Treat the wild herbivore base of that landscape, and treat the pressure that villages place on the forest. Firing first is not justified. Conducting the study after the shooting is foolish. This inverted priority is exactly what I object to most strongly.
In August the department announced a rapid assessment of leopards and bears across 18 sensitive divisions. That work should have been done before the order, not after it.
Animals in Uttarakhand have not suddenly become more dangerous. The core is already packed with tigers. The prey base is weak. Villages have pressed right up against the forest. And the government is trying to repair, with empty cages and bullets, a structure that was created by habitat and human pressure.
Killing 13 leopards will not remove the tiger pressure of Nainital, nor the leopard pressure of Pauri and Rudraprayag. The space will fill again.

Nepal's media is reporting that explosive devices were washed down from Tibet side into Nepal after the floods. What were these devices used for in Tibet side?

Breaking mountains for some construction? Did the Glacier break after one such detonation for tunneling or construction?

Such questions need to be asked. But we can see immediate flood of counter the following way in comments, quotes and community notes:
