Just started the excellent @_HannahRitchie’s new book. Pre ordered this a while back and it finally came the other day. Already a great read - I’ve not even got that far. Very accessible in the way it’s written, hopeful and positive in tone. Can’t wait to get stuck in more
@_HannahRitchie It was ace and book pre-ordered! I wondered why there was no mention of nuclear though. Surely this should be a big part of the conversation. Nevertheless, brilliant talk!
I used to be anti nuclear, it was just what everyone around me did. Then I started listening to the experts and reading about energy myself, and I realized how wrong I was. You do not have to believe me, if you are skeptical, just look at the data.
A lot to unpack here, but worth going through
1. "It's too expensive..."
A nuclear plant requires a lot of money up front to build. But given the lifetime of these plants and how much electricity they reliably produce, they generate cheap electricity over long periods of time.
@nuclearzak There’s no puppet master pulling her strings, that’s not what I’m saying. But there absolutely is a large part of the media and other sources pushing an overly-apocalyptic view of climate change that informs peoples choices. I’m sure you don’t agree with that so let’s leave it
@nuclearzak Attacking the rhetoric that led to her decision, not her decision itself. She can do whatever the hell she wants for whatever reasons but to cite climate grief for not taking a flight points to a much more worrying, general trend and you know that’s what they meant.
@nuclearzak Why is she off limits though? This case is a pretty good example of showing what climate anxiety can do. You’re seeing malice and ill-intent towards her, where there is none.
@nuclearzak Anyway, happy to leave it there. I don’t think decouple were throwing shade, attacking king or being anyway unkind to the girl in question.
@nuclearzak Just read the article. Again it wasn’t a dig at HER. It was pointing out what climate anxiety, in many cases brought on by misleading reporting (see overuse of rcp8.5) can do to people. I’m of the belief that in this case, the response doesn’t match the real world consequences
@inyourmedia@BjornLomborg@jordanbpeterson@rustyrockets This is getting silly. There’s no real scientific evidence to back up anything you’re saying. I’ve been obviously looked into it quite extensively for obvious reasons. Anyway, you do you.
@inyourmedia@BjornLomborg@jordanbpeterson@rustyrockets You don’t know what you’re talking about, clearly. I’m vegan myself and know plenty of ‘vegan males’ and none of them look ill. Just another silly myth. You can look/be unhealthy on any diet if you don’t plan it sensibly.
