Scientists have recently studied an extraordinary cosmic explosion, GRB 250702B, that challenges everything we thought we knew about how gamma-ray bursts occur.

Usually, such bursts are over in seconds or minutes, but this one blazed for at least seven hours and even showed signs of X-ray activity a day before its main outburst, making it the longest gamma-ray burst ever recorded.

Using the #JWST, astronomers inspected the distant host galaxy of the explosion, a massive, extremely dusty galaxy whose light has traveled some 8 billion years to reach us.

The location of the burst within the galaxy, far from any central supermassive black hole, rules out certain standard scenarios tied to galactic cores.

The unusual properties of GRB 250702B have led researchers to consider several exotic origins. One plausible explanation is a rare, dramatic encounter where a black hole, possibly of “intermediate” mass or perhaps a stellar-mass black hole, either merged with a companion star or tidally disrupted a star that came too close, shredding it apart and unleashing powerful jets of energy that we detected as gamma rays.

Another hypothesis is that the burst still resulted from the death of a massive star, but under unusually extreme and not yet fully understood conditions.

Because the event was so powerful and so long-lived, researchers were able to gather a rich array of data across the electromagnetic spectrum, from gamma rays and X-rays, to infrared and radio.

The multi-instrument coordination was crucial, and it allowed them not only to detect the burst, but also to image its host galaxy in unprecedented detail.

Despite these efforts, the exact cause of GRB 250702B remains uncertain. Astronomers emphasize that this could represent a new kind of stellar explosion, or at least an extremely rare variant of a gamma-ray burst.
