Diabolo
All alone upon the quiet evening square,
By the ancient, shadow-brooding dome,
Plays a maiden with her flying golden hair -
Diabolo.
Up and down with lively, changing beat,
Swift she swings the sticks, as if she sounded
Dancing rhythms, setting all of life
To pulse around!
And while I linger, watching her at play,
More and more I see: the merry maiden
Is Life itself, so bold, so childlike,
Conducting all...
Ever thus it played, that wild young girl,
Always in a hasty two-step measure,
Close beside the ancient, shadow-brooding dome -
Diabolo.
