KMTC Student Stabbed to Death by Girlfriend Days To His Graduation
In a heart-wrenching incident, Benedict Kiptoo, a 24-year-old student at the Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) in Kitale, was stabbed to death by his girlfriend on December 1, 2024, mere days before he was set to graduate. The tragic event was triggered when Kiptoo returned home late, leading to a dispute that escalated fatally.
This case brings to light the under-discussed issue of violence against men in Kenya. When National Assembly Speaker Wetangula attempted to address being beaten by his wife, he was met with public scorn, highlighting the societal dismissal of male victims. Another poignant example is Simon Kiguta, who endured physical abuse from his wife, leaving him with permanent scars. Mike Okombe, a rugby star, also met a tragic end at the hands of his girlfriend in 2018, showcasing the severity of such domestic violence.
According to available data, while 40% of Kenyan women report experiencing physical violence, approximately 18% of men also face similar abuse, yet these cases are often underreported due to cultural stigma and lack of support. The incident with Kiptoo not only cuts short a promising career but also serves as a stark reminder of the need for gender-inclusive approaches to domestic violence prevention and support.
Question:
Is Violence Against Men Taken Seriously in Kenya?
@xtiandela The same energy they use to create awareness on Femicide should be directly propotional to the energy they should use to condem their own for such an inhuman act.
