Lessons From Getting Fired by My Biggest Client
Three months into a retainer, the brand ended our contract. Said my content "wasn't aligned with their new direction."
I was devastated. This was 40% of my monthly income. Gone with a single email.
Spent weeks analyzing what went wrong. Finally realized the truth.
I'd gotten comfortable.
After the first two months of strong performance, I stopped pushing. Delivered exactly what they asked for instead of bringing new ideas. Stopped studying their competitors. Stopped suggesting improvements to their strategy.
I became a content factory instead of a strategic partner.
Brands don't pay premium rates for order takers. They pay for people who make them better.
The replacement creator they hired wasn't more talented. She was hungrier. Brought ideas to every call. Challenged their assumptions. Treated the retainer like something she had to earn every single month.
Now I operate differently. Every retainer client gets a monthly strategy memo from me. New content angles. Competitor observations. Platform trends they should know about.
Not because they ask for it. Because that's what keeps me irreplaceable.
Comfort kills retainers. Hunger keeps them.
