India is developing a layered missile defence shield designed to intercept incoming ballistic missiles before they reach their targets. At its core are the Prithvi Air Defence (PAD) and Advanced Air Defence (AAD) interceptor systems, designed to engage threats at different altitudes.

PAD is designed for high-altitude interception, while AAD is intended to engage incoming ballistic missiles at lower altitudes. Together, these indigenous systems form part of India’s effort to detect, track and destroy hostile missile threats through a two-tier defence architecture.

The goal is to strengthen India’s strategic security through homegrown technology and multiple layers of protection. While no missile defence system can guarantee interception in every scenario, PAD and AAD represent important milestones in India’s pursuit of an indigenous ballistic missile defence capability.
