Proud of my old newspaper, @the_hindu, take a bow @nambath, the only paper to have the correct headline for what transpired in parliament yesterday. All other newspapers seem to have bought the government’s spin that the ‘opposition defeated women’s reservation’!
This has become a recurring theme. The center refuses to fund projects in Kerala (which they fund in other states), the state borrows to fund its projects, further sliding the state into a debt vortex. When Kerala government asks for debt relief, the center shows the middle finger and uses Kerala's taxes to fund similar projects in BJP-ruled states.
Firecrackers are not a part of ancient Hindu culture. That does not mean they have not, over time, become a part of traditions around Diwali.
I grew up bursting firecrackers and enjoyed them thoroughly. I hope for a future where younger generations can also find some of that joy.
At the same time, my father grew up eating six modak a day during Ganpati. He now has diabetes because, unlike his grandfather, he is not compensating by toiling in the fields.
Traditions evolve. They change with time. Bursting firecrackers is not inherently terrible - but bursting sutli bombs and kilometre-long ladis (for Diwali or Eid, in case the keyboard warriors come at this post in the comment) is simply illogical.
The air we breathe is so toxic that children around us are growing up with stunted lungs. We have become so numb to air pollution that we normalise 150 AQI in Mumbai by pointing to 500 AQI in Delhi. And, what’s worse, we make even this a Hindu-Muslim issue to avoid any accountability.
This Diwali, I hope for better sense to prevail - not just during festivals, but throughout the year. For polluting industries to be moved away from outskirts of cities. For construction sites to follow pollution norms. For the government to finally realise that they have been elected to govern, not just pass the buck.
A youtube channel with 5 million followers made an amazing 30 minute video about ISRO.
But the Indian RW attacked the channel in comments for showing an incorrect Indian map of a few seconds in the video.
How did we get so isolated in the world? This is how.
"Let's be clear. India wants nothing Pakistan has. India is happy to leave PAK alone. But Pakistan is a bigoted power that wants to take over parts of India only because the people living there share the same religion as Pakistanis," says Shashi Tharoor
An important point made by Foreign Secy Vikram Misri today- the terror attack in Pahalgam was also done with the aim to instigate communal riots in India. It is to the credit of the people that this did not happen, he said. For those spewing hate against Muslims, you are playing into Pakistani hands.
Sorry but if you debate someone for 5 HOURS that’s your friend. You guys like each other. I don’t care if you’re hurling the worst insults known to man. If you can keep a conversation going for 5 hours straight that’s literally your boy
‘We are not the incharge of law & order in J&K. But I won't use today's situation to demand statehood from centre. I won't demand statehood on the dead bodies. We will demand statehood on some other occasion’.. I had no words to apologise to the family members of the victims. Although, I'm not in charge of law & order, but I invited tourists to visit Kashmir. As their host, it was my duty to look after them and ensure their safety. Have no words to say sorry to the tourists*. @OmarAbdullah gives an exemplary statesman-like speech in J and K assembly. Absolutely top class 👍⭐️
Folks who think the South was rich from the start:
Look at the poverty rates during the 90s, when India was liberalizing. K'taka, Tamil Nadu were worse off than Rajasthan, & not THAT much better than UP
Kerala & Andhra did better, but still worse than Guj or Punjab
Contd. 🧵
