The recent pollution in the Hartbeespoort Dam is likely to have been caused by Pelchem SOC Ltd, a subsidiary of the state-owned South African Nuclear Energy Corporation (Necsa).

Pelchem SOC Ltd, which is the sole producer and supplier of fluorochemicals in the Southern Hemisphere, has a permit to release effluent into the Crocodile River, which flows into the dam. Levels of poly- and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), or "forever chemicals," were found to be extremely high at the point where the Crocodile River enters the dam, pointing to Pelchem as a key source of this industrial pollution.
