After teaching K-12 for 24 years, I recently joined @Bluum_EdTech as a professional development specialist. Now, I get to teach teachers about #edtech I am excited about the opportunity to help teachers create engaging lessons for their students!!
Leaders need to be willing to listen to bad news. They need to be willing to hear uncomfortable truths. And they need to create a culture in the organization where everyone feels ok speaking up.
It is sad that the people making decisions about education support everyone but the teachers. This is why teachers are resigning and we have a teacher shortage.
Maslow applies to educators now more than ever. Leaders need to remember that when they’re talking about culture, mission, and all that stuff at the top of the pyramid... they have staff members & students who are worried about safety, security, and all that stuff at the bottom.
I think managers are working to hold their people accountable for their job. I think leaders are trying to creat the conditions where their people hold themselves accountable for their job. The former is a culture of compliance. The latter... a culture of excellence.
It’s good to have fun at work... practical jokes, inside jokes, corny jokes, music, shenanigans, hijinks, tomfoolery, silliness... and lots of laughing.
Colleagues that have fun together, work hard together. And ultimately, it’s a good culture in which students can learn.
This pandemic has already revealed that:
- schools are so much more than just schools.
- many people now realize how tough it is to be a teacher and that teachers are grossly underpaid.
- teachers are irreplaceable and essential to learning and education.

HEY @ThomasRhett We’re doing a concert themed Homecoming and we have a building & spirit day dedicated to YOU! HOW MANY RTs FOR YOU TO COME TO OUR HOCO ON SEP 7TH???🤠🤠
Teachers… there are some students in your school that have an extra special advantage: they have kids who have YOU as their teacher. How lucky are those kids!? How happy are those parents!? You feel the moral imperative to care about them…to nurture them...and to prepare them.
Some teachers seem like naturally gifted educators. They may well be… but that doesn’t mean they don’t work really hard at it. People don’t just show up exceptional… they make a commitment to do whatever it takes… to BE exceptional.
