A telling contrast in The Examiner today - a fear-based, non-evidence-based, dog-whistling election policy from the Liberals (note the comment from Tas Police in the article), and the sensible call from Grant Herring in the letters page for evidence-based justice reform.

If you are a 10-yr government announcing a policy to respond to a high level of recidivism, the problems you should be trying to solve are the failures of your justice and corrections systems - clearly your problem isn't catching people who commit crimes, it's making sure the justice and corrections systems are genuinely rehabilitative. Instead, the Liberals have lurched to simplistic law and order vote grabbing by announcing a 'taskforce' and more police.

Self-interested vote grabs from major parties will not solve Tasmania's most difficult challenges - in fact, too often they simply entrench the problems that create those challenges. #politas
