Apple brought some nice updates to in-app subscriptions this year! In this thread, I've compiled everything from WWDC 23 related to app monetization. Essential knowledge for every app owner!
New in App Store Connect: you'll be able to setup regional pre-orders. In some regions your app may be ready for sale, in some open for pre-order. You can even schedule a pre-order date
📈 On July 25, prices for apps and in-app purchases (excluding subscriptions) in the App Store will increase in:
- 🇪🇬 Egypt (VAT 14%)
- 🇹🇷 Türkiye (VAT 20%)
- 🇹🇿 Tanzania (VAT 18%)
- 🇳🇬 Nigeria
Your proceeds for subscriptions sold in those countries will decrease.
Paywall review: Flighty – Apple Design Award winner
💰$50K+
App for frequent flyers. Very interesting paywall design!
💡Horizontal scroll for products: yearly, weekly, lifetime. No trials.
💡Family plans are hidden, shown after tap on “Show family plans”. The plans are Annual Family and Lifetime Family, both 40-50% more expensive.
💡Top carousel swipes automatically, images demonstrate how the app utilizes Apple features such as LiveActivities or Widgets.
💡Scroll down to see social proof and features. For social proof, Flighty shares Apple featuring, reviews and rating. Features presented as flight safety card, nice!
🚀 What I would improve: The paywall looks great, but feels lacking in focus and direction. 5 offers is too many for one paywall, it’s hard to compare it and I’d rather swipe through features than offers. Also, the purchase button is not pinned and not repeated at the bottom of the screen, but there is a “Back to plans” button.
🔥 Apple introduced system paywall screens in SwiftUI
New system subscription screens:
- 1 line of code
- Automatically retrieve and display all the necessary information (price, eligibility, etc)
- Support customization with SwiftUI
- Not yet mandatory?
OpenAI just released the official ChatGPT iOS app.
Let’s compare its paywall to one of the largest competitor (or copycat) app: Chat with Ask AI (💰$2M+).
💡OpenAI ChatGPT app has a simple and clean paywall with focus on features. There are no upsells in the app. The paywall can be opened from settings.
💡Chat with Ask AI has a classic trial reminder approach with a timeline. There are no feature explanations, and the paywall is shown after short onboarding.
💡OpenAI ChatGPT has one offer: a monthly subscription for $19.99, no trial.
💡Chat with Ask AI offers a weekly subscription for $4.99 with 3 day trial and lifetime access for $39.99. Lifetime is interesting; that probably means user retention is so low that API costs are negligible.
Who has a better monetization strategy?
Who did the better paywall?
2 major plant scanning apps: PlantIn (💰$1M+) and PictureThis (💰$5M+)
💡PlantIn offers 2 lifetime options: for $229 and $59. The default is a weekly subscription for $4.99 with a 3-day trial
💡PictureThis offers one plan: annual subscription for $34.99 with a 7-day trial.
💡PlantIn shows the app's features via pictures in a carousel.
💡PictureThis focuses on social proof: years of research, thousands of plants, featured in the App Store.
💡Both apps offer a trial reminder activated by toggle.
