#BRIDGEBS partner #IBERBAS was on an expedition to conduct both underwater and onboard research on #microplastics, #zoobenthos, and #ecological status of water bodies in the Bulgarian Black Sea coastal zone.

After filtering 1 litre of sunflower oil through a Whatman GF-C filter, there were 5 strands on the filter even although I followed control steps for self contamination. Insight of the day: if you are using oil to extract microplastics, make sure it is clean.

Plastic has lipophilic properties and sticks to oil and oily substances. To extract microplastics from sediments I needed pure oil.

Every time after a strong storm between 15 - 30% of the waste on the beaches south of the city of Burgas is of a international origin. Packaging is found mostly from Turkey and Romania, but those from Ukraine, Russia and even Georgia are not an uncommon sight #Internationallitter

These are photos from the #marinelitter #monitoring in November. Drinks bottles, detergent bottles, yoghurt buckets, large plastic cheese boxes and bags of rice. Products that are stored on fishing and cargo vessels whose packaging is dumped in open waters in the #BlackSea.
