@jdjmke @Maxwelllov3 Caro is a innovative journalist who did re-write the LBJ childhood to better match the facts. But he doesn't read history widely enough to notice when others have done similar work. His take on Ike and the 1957 Civil Rights bill reflects this general ignorance beyond his topic.
@jdjmke @Maxwelllov3 He makes that claim - that it's about their views - in his bibliographic intro to that chapter's footnotes, but then within the main text itself he regurgitates the "corruption of the carptetbaggers" and other such nonsense refuted by DuBois in the 30s and many others since.
@jdjmke @Maxwelllov3 Caro has clearly read the whole book, given how often he cites it, and so he knows it's openly racist. It's just odd that he would start this heroic arc whose climax will be the Civil Rights bill of '64 with that as his only source, (it is true that the Foner wasn't out til '88)
Today on the radio I asked Professor Thomas J. Rowland if the current political vitriol is unusual in American history, and he answered with a concise summary of the long 19th century... lingering especially on the elections of 1856, 1860, and 1864. https://t.co/we3kYS9xy6
@UmpScorecards Based on the ump adjusted zone you show here the 5th pitch to Freeman in 8th was clearly a strike. Why is that not listed as a missed call? Please double check.
I guest hosted the @MaggieDaunShow yesterday and asked @TyDunne, @DanRShafer, @ByMattWild, and @compujeramey about covering the Packers, Wisconsin elections, Milwaukee culture, and City Hall as independent journalists with deep research, strong opinions, and gentle sarcasm
@mike_louison@DanRShafer Direct quote from the link: "โบโบ How To Interpret The Data (Intro to %tiles): โโ
(skip if you already know what %tiles are) ... Among the Top 10, the age that is the:
90th %tile means that among the Top 10 players, only 1 would be your age or older (9 would be younger).
@mike_louison@DanRShafer This is really interesting data thank you for sharing. In the intro it clearly states that 34 is not the mean age for the 10 ten tackles, it's the 90th percentile of the top 10. In other words, 9/10 top 10 tackles are 34 or younger.
@mike_louison@DanRShafer And what those stats bear out is not the certainty that he will get injured (although most do eventually) but that once you are 30 if you are injured then you are much less likely to recover quickly or fully.
@mike_louison@DanRShafer In other words, for Bahk to still be a top 10 LT in the 4th year of his mega-deal, then he would be the outlier. Yes, he had a chance, but no, it was never worth betting on.
