“I was genuinely very interested in joining Barcelona. It has always been a dream of mine, and having so many friends and national team colleagues there Pedri, Lamine Yamal, Fermín made the opportunity even more appealing.

I discussed it with my family, but they were not supportive, particularly my brother Iñaki. Athletic Club is the team of my childhood; it is the club that shaped me, having progressed through their academy all the way to the first team.

One of the big reasons I stayed is the pressure at Barcelona. Look at Lamine he can play incredible one game and have an off day the next, and the fans will still troll him even though he’s La Masia. At Athletic it’s different. They don’t put that crazy pressure on you because they don’t expect you to win everything every season.

Then the financial fair play constraints at Barcelona were a concern. We saw the difficulties with Dani Olmo’s registration, where he was unable to play in several matches despite being fit. I did not want to take the risk of arriving in peak condition only to be unavailable due to administrative issues. There was also the matter of a significant salary reduction.

That said, I congratulate Barcelona on winning the league and wish them continued success. While a part of me wonders what might have been, I am fully committed to Athletic Bilbao, where my heart and roots remain.”
