Cosmopolitan Leader. Proud to have served as: Director Law Policy & Diplomacy @ICRC; UNSRT @UN_SPExperts; Professor @UofGLaw & @Geneva_Academy; VP @IIHL_Sanremo
Thank you, farewell & au revoir!
As I conclude my work at the @ICRC’s Directorate & wind down for a long awaited sabbatical, I am deeply grateful:
➡️for my extraordinary journey with the #RedCross
➡️for the inspiring companionship of our colleagues
➡️and for unforgettable moments shared with the men, women and children we serve.
In parting, I wish to dedicate a piano inspiration to the memory of those who courageously served our mission and never returned - making the ultimate sacrifice in the name of humanity: “I gave it all...”
Thank you, farewell & au revoir!

Two fundamental resolutions on international humanitarian law adopted at the International #RedCrossRedCrescent Conference!
☑️Creating a universal culture of compliance with #IHL
☑️Protecting civilians against the human cost of #ICT activities in armed conflicts

The @ICRC’s #IHL Challenges Report: An absolute key-document at the #RCRC24 International Conference.
As ever, the single most important challenge to #IHL remains insufficient compliance by the parties to armed conflicts.

Summary: 🧵⬇️
Staying neutral allows us to do our job. It is not indifference: it is a deliberate choice.
Our mission comes from the Geneva Conventions, universal laws that preserve a degree of humanity, even in war. Today, 161 years since our founding, neutrality remains as crucial as ever.
Hands down the most important recurring forum in human history:
➡️All components of the world’s largest humanitarian movement
➡️All 196 States party to #GenevaConventions
➡️Guided by #Humanity#Neutrality & #Impartiality
➡️Focus on what unites rather than divides humanity

Glad to see our Resolution on #PrincipledHumanitarianAction adopted!
Serving @ICRC 15yrs, from delegate to director, the #FundamentalPrinciples were my guiding star, offering orientation, confidence & identity in an increasingly chaotic & violent world:➡️https://t.co/gSFxKmOpOf
At #HRC50, the Human Rights Council appointed @DrAliceJEdwards as Special Rapporteur on torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment.
Today, on #TortureVictimsDay 2022, torture & abuse remains widespread & impunity rampant worldwide.
While Goverments readily promote respect for #HumanRights in other States, they rarely if ever, show genuine political will to address their own violations.

I warmly thank all of you for your support & engagement on #HumanRights in the past years!
Great to be back @ICRC!
Everyday, everywhere, our 20’000 colleagues go the #ExtraMile to bring #hope & #humanity to the most vulnerable, often in very difficult & dangerous circumstances.
Working with them, side by side, always has been one of the biggest privileges of my life!

Thanks @AJEPodcasts for this updated edition of our discussion of January 2022 on #AJTheTake, summarizing the conclusions of my #SRTorture investigation into the case of #Assange.
Julian Assange waged a long fight against extradition from the UK to the US. One allegation after another had come to cloud the narrative of Assange.
But Melzer discovered the level of deception is staggering.

Three candidates have now been shortlisted for the next #SRTorture, to be appointed by the @UN_HRC on 8 July - all of them esteemed colleagues and strong #HumanRights advocates with invaluable expertise & experience.

My latest: A new book exposes the mechanics of a 12-year legal charade by Sweden, the UK and US to obscure the political nature of Julian Assange’s incarceration. All three have ridden roughshod over the rule of law, says UN torture expert Nils Melzer https://t.co/qGOLynClIO
