Sri Lanka is deeply saddened by the devastating earthquake that has struck Venezuela on 24 June, causing tragic loss of life and significant destruction. Our heartfelt condolences go out to the families of those who lost their lives and to all those affected by this tragedy.

I had the pleasure of meeting Hon. @vanushi_walters, opposition spokesperson for foreign affairs of the New Zealand Parliament. We had a constructive dialogue on a variety of bilateral matters . I also briefed her on the economy of Sri Lanka, including trade, tourism, investment opportunities and political developments. Ms. Walters also spoke fondly of her Sri Lankan roots and the important role played by the Sri Lankan diaspora in New Zealand.

I was honoured to be the first Sri Lankan Foreign Minister to receive the traditional Maori “Pōwhiri” welcome at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade of New Zealand this morning, at the start of my official visit to the country.
I was honoured to meet with Rt.Hon. @winstonpeters, Minister of Foreign Affairs of New Zealand this afternoon. I thanked the Hon. Minister for the invitation extended to me for this official visit and for hosting me and my delegation for lunch. Minister Peters and I had a very constructive discussion on a variety of bilateral matters such as political, trade, sports, governance and the dynamic Sri Lankan community in New Zealand. We also exchanged views regarding the current global and regional developments and their impact.

I was pleased to meet H.E. Wang Yi, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China, during his brief visit to Sri Lanka this morning (12/01/26).
While welcoming Minister Wang Yi, I extended my sincere appreciation to the Government and the people of China for their timely and generous support to Sri Lanka in the aftermath of Cyclone Ditwah.
Our discussions focused among others on further advancing cooperation in the areas of trade and investment, development cooperation and tourism. The discussions also focused on rebuilding Sri Lanka post Cyclone Ditwah.
In this regard, I particularly requested the assistance of the Chinese government in infrastructure development including reconstruction of identified roads, railways and bridges which were affected and Minister Wang Yi assured his personal intervention to the said request and expressed confidence that Sri Lanka is on the right track for early recovery, and reaffirmed the Chinese Government’s fullest support.
