Some have been surprised by my conciliatory post to Mamdani. Mamdani won a decisive election. He is going to be our mayor for the next four years. I care enormously about New York City which has been very good to me and my family since we emigrated to NYC in the 1890s.
(And for the record I have been a NYC resident since 1988 despite Sliwa’s statement to the contrary. I was born in NYC and grew up in Chappaqua and returned to NYC when I graduated from college.)
While I did not support Mamdani for mayor and have concerns about the unintended and negative consequences of his policies, I want to do everything I can to help NYC regardless of who are mayor is.
@eyeslasho I remember when Twitter was full of left-wing trolls quote-tweeting instances of wrongthink to summon mobs to attack it. Now right-wing trolls are doing it. I'd thought perhaps that this tactic was inherent to the left, but it seems to be a problem with Twitter itself.
one thing you learn as you get older:
fewer deep relationships >>>> many shallow relationships
people who do truly meaningful work do so in small squads of deep contact
those with many shallow relationships end up becoming brokers in one way or another
“give yourself a lot of shots to get lucky” is even better advice than it appears on the surface.
luck isn’t an independent variable but increases super-linearly with more surface area—you meet more people, make more connections between new ideas, learn patterns, etc.
I never once saw my parents argue. They were very careful about that. I knew sometimes there was tension between them but I never saw them argue.
I think that's a tremendous gift to give to a child.
one of the easiest policy wins i can imagine for the US is to reform high-skill immigration.
the fact that many of the most talented people in the world want to be here is a hard-won gift; embracing them is the key to keeping it that way.
hard to get this back if we lose it.
Recreational marijuana is legal for adult use in Maryland on July 1.
State officials expect cannabis businesses will gain millions of recreational customers. https://t.co/pd3YIcVftF
perhaps the most underrated & important skill:
being able to evaluate people on their intrinsics (i.e. their intellect, talent, attitude—their true self) VS their extrinsics (i.e. resumé, brands, external signals)
i've met maybe 5 people in my whole life who are great at this
GOING META
Congrats to Apple and everyone who worked on the Vision Pro. But I wouldn't count out Zuck and Meta, for four reasons.
1) First, we're still in the bulky headset era. That means Oculus Quest's focus on gaming is a better fit. A gamer doesn't care if they look weird with a headset on, because no one else is around.
2) Second, Zuck may decide to pursue an Android strategy against Apple. Their new Twitter competitor is rumored to be built on Mastodon[1], he spoke quite a bit about interoperability in his public talks[2], and he's certainly aware of just how much traction the partially open/leaked LLaMa got as well[3]. So as a corporate decision, he may use open source to counterposition against Apple.
3) Third, and relatedly — while he did try and fail with Libra, the fact that he tried means he's more open to crypto than the other big tech CEOs. Probably they should have just added Bitcoin payments to Messenger. And Zuck gets why cryptocurrency and cryptographically provable items would be a big component of an international metaverse. Apple isn't as enthusiastic.
4) Fourth, it's in the name. The metaverse is existential to Meta in a way it isn't to Apple. So Zuck is willing to wear the headset[4], while Apple execs aren't yet. That's big. Apple may care too much about appearing cool to go all-in on gamers.
TLDR: if it turns out gaming, interoperability, crypto, and being nerdy for a while is what bootstraps the metaverse — and I think it might be — then Meta may still do very well.
