Funny how the claim keeps circulating that “BJP-RSS banned” the 1992 Ramayana anime because animation was somehow blasphemous.

Reality is messier and far less convenient. An early VHP objection came from a misunderstanding of Yugo Sako’s documentary work; once he explained the project, they cleared it. The Congress government of the day refused formal co-production, mainly because officials thought animation was too “cartoonish” for the gods. The film was finished in Japan, screened at IFFI in 1993, later shown on Doordarshan (Arun Govil voicing Prabhu Ram, no less), and eventually reached a generation via Cartoon Network.

What actually limited a big theatrical run was the raw post-Babri climate of late 1992–93 under a Congress Centre-not some coordinated Sangh fatwa. Calling that a “BJP-RSS ban” is just lazy political fanfiction & a deliberate attempt to pin blame on them when they had nothing to do with the ban.

The film was a serious, respectful Indo-Japanese effort. Pretending otherwise to score a cheap point says more about the people pushing the story than about the film itself.
