#MarineMonday#MarineTuesday Features Oval butterflyfish (Chaetodon lunulatus). This beauty is found in the Pacific Ocean with ranges from Eastern Indonesia to the Hawaiian islands. Oval butterflyfish feed solely on coral and form breeding pairs. #marinebiology 📸 @ninakbean
This week's #fieldworkfriday#features@ninakbean research which looks at how sunscreen influences coral physiology. She is interested in understanding how early life stages of corals are influenced by climate change. Pic 2 is of 2 newly settled coral polyps, her study species.
What did Teegan, @symbioecology, and I do with our Saturday night you ask? Rewrite the lyrics of @lizzo’s Truth Hurts to be about coral bleaching, of course.
Coral spawning last night in Curacao was crazy-go-nuts
Here's endangered O. faveolata (Mountainous star coral) spawning Day 6 after the full moon, 3 hrs 26 mins after sunset... in other words, right on schedule.
#GlowingGone@glowinggone I chose to depict a single, newly settled polyp to stress the importance of coral survivorship at all life stages. The blue swirls show how water flows around a single polyp. This painting was inspired by the work of Dr. Douglas Brumley from MIT.

Today we said good bye to our youngest & longest-running intern/polyp, Dyson! He joined us in Nov 2016 at 14 yrs old!
We will miss him, but we know he is off to do great things w/ @captainplanetfd, @kupuhawaii, his own Project O.C.E.A.N., & more!
Mahalo!!! #happypolyps
I completed my marine biology degree at #UHM with summa cum laude distinction! It wouldn’t have been possible without the unwavering support from my family, professors, mentors, coaches, and friends. Now, on to a Master’s at #CSUN with Dr. Peter Edmunds. 🤓
The ocean is my continual inspiration and motivation. I knew studying hard, interning & volunteering during my undergrad would help me better understand the ocean and lead me to my own scientific discoveries one day. In sum, I did it for the ocean and will continue to do so.
