In CN and JPN, he was always a male—however, I think what happened is people conflate words like “beautiful” or “fair” as appearance descriptors with a man being feminine, which is not the case in Asian literature, where attractiveness = slender, pretty.

People exposed to western media are really conditioned that to be men, someone should be described with “alpha male” characteristics, while the most attractive men in Asian medias are generally more beautiful than “alpha” 🐈‍⬛

@roxxmaru But it’s not marketed like this in Japan, where the artist is from, and other countries. Tangled is way more popular. The prince from Frozen, Tarzan, and the man from Pocahontas are all missing. When foreigners haven’t seen Nezha 1 & 2, we don’t accuse racism, so why must they?
