The N64 controller is constantly maligned - unfairly, by my judgment. Not only was it the 1st to introduce the ANALOG THUMBSTICK and haptic feedback (w/ addon), but the designers were so thoughtful as to account for 3 distinct modes of play (w/ stick used by L, R, or neither).

People in 1996 had no clue how to control a character or camera in 3D yet. So while now we have the luxury of modern controllers with 2 thumbsticks and an array of face buttons that are almost objectively better, that design would've been DOA at the time. Baby steps.
