Very pleased to have graduated from @UCLMS@uclmedsci with the University of London Gold Medal in Medicine! Endless thanks to faculty and my incredible family and friends. Congratulations to UCL's class of 2023 - the perfect celebration to mark the end of 6 years.

Most people don’t realize how unusual the UK’s doctor-training model is until they compare it internationally.
France, Germany, Australia, the Netherlands — all move doctors to independent practice years faster.
The UK isn’t the norm. It’s the outlier.
Can you see the problem @wesstreeting@DHSCgovuk 🤷🏻♂️
31million/month consult GP practices with similar number having haircuts
102,000 hairdressers in England with 40,000 salons
38,000 GPs with 6200 Surgeries
On average people spend £400pa on hair
GPs receive £169pa per patient
Most people have no idea how bad the UK doctor training system really is.
It demands double the training time of other countries, pays doctors less at every stage, and then often keeps them “junior” even after they finish all their training.
Look at the numbers.

For context - compare my tone to how I was spoken to by @wesstreeting in the clips of him that have been circulated. I think it's unbecoming of a Secretary of State. But it does illustrate the difference between a politician and a professional.
@wesstreeting - I was calm and professional, having just worked a night shift. Your patronising attack on me and doctors for calling out the failed deal and issues with your proposal showed clear contempt. Join us on the front lines some day.

@wesstreeting@BMAResidents@wesstreeting I finished my night shift to call you just as you labelled my choice 'irresponsible.' Pay restoration is about safety, retention, and respect, not just money. Spend time on the front line to see the realities we face and why I am worth an extra £7/h.
@NickFerrariLBC
When as a patient you are concerned that your care is being compromised by resident doctors strike action (only 3 days in the working week for this whole year)
Next time you can't see a doctor consider this - half of all doctors that are newly qualified will be unemployed next month. Currently many GPs are unemployed working as uber drivers
Why do you think the government are running down YOUR @NHSuk ?
Why are many of our government ministers/ MPs funded by private health equity firms?.....
Join the dots.
'Even if our pay was restored we would still be paid less than the Physician Assistants with their two year degree '
BMA Resident Doctors Committee Co-chair, Dr Ross Nieuwoudt told #BBCBreakfast his members feel 'a little bit tricked' by Health Secretary Wes Streeting as they began a five-day strike in England

Now we know why Rishi Sunak refuses to negotiate with NHS staff.
He wants the strikes to go ahead, so he can blame doctors and nurses for his failure.

@CharlotDearling@wesstreeting Hi Louise - we are living the reality of today's NHS and seeing valued colleagues leaving for other countries/industries where they feel more valued. We are trying to protect the NHS' future. Remember we lose pay when we strike and regret the disruption it causes to our patients.
"The Leng Review appears to have been conducted thoroughly and even-handedly, and we welcome its recommendations on patient safety in particular."
The recommendations should be implemented with the highest priority, say Trisha Greenhalgh and Martin McKee

Hundreds to thousands of UK-trained doctors will be unemployed in a matter of weeks as their contracts end this August. Why are we training doctors to leave them jobless?
My thanks to @Telegraph for helping me raise this issue.

Will wait to see the final report, but preliminary takes are hugely concerning.
#lengreview seems to have green-lighted a parallel track of PAs effectively working as doctors with only a fraction of the training
Ask a resident doctor what their commute is. Ask if they chose the town they live in. Ask how many friends’ weddings they have missed. Ask if they have a hobby. Ask if they have had to delay starting a family because of exams or training.
They sacrifice *relentlessly*.
Imagine going through your whole career, reaping its benefits, then condemning those who come after you, despite the fact they face far worse pay, conditions and job prospects.
This generation of doctors is standing up and fighting for our profession. Long may it continue.
FPR.
The government 10 yr NHS plan is diabolical.
They want to move away from “train to role”, i.e.
Requiring a medical degree to work as a doctor!
& instead focus of allowing non-doctors to “train to task”
PATIENTS CANNOT BE BROKEN DOWN INTO “TASKS TO BE COMPLETED”!

Clare Gerada et al didn’t pay tuition fees to attend medical school, didn’t have >£50k student debt, nor ever faced the prospect of unemployment.
Context is everything.
Doctors received offers for Radiology training posts at around 3-4pm. They were able to accept these offers on Oriel and received confirmation of acceptance. Offers then began to disappear on Oriel. At 6:30pm they received this email.
Simply unacceptable.
