The main points discussed were:

1. Missionary schools

The bishops asked for government-owned missionary schools to be returned to the churches and requested support to build more schools.

President Tinubu responded that the federal government does not control most of those schools because education is mainly handled by state governments. He said church leaders should discuss the issue with state governors. He also pointed out that, as governor of Lagos State, he returned some schools to the Catholic Church.

2. Insecurity

The bishops said Nigeria is facing serious security problems and described the country as “bleeding.”

Tinubu agreed that insecurity is a major problem but disagreed with that description of the current situation. He said his administration inherited many challenges and explained some of the measures being taken, such as increasing the number of army divisions and supporting reforms like state policing.

3. INEC and democracy

The bishops raised concerns about election fairness, the independence of INEC, and the possibility of Nigeria becoming a one-party state.

The writer believes that these concerns indirectly accuse Tinubu of influencing INEC. Tinubu rejected that suggestion, insisted that INEC is independent, and argued that it is the responsibility of opposition parties to organize themselves and convince voters.

4. The economy

The bishops spoke about the hardship and hunger many Nigerians are experiencing.

Tinubu acknowledged that many people are struggling but argued that the economic reforms are necessary and will eventually lead to long-term growth.

At this juncture, I'm convinced that some people are no longer speaking as opposition figures or offering genuine advice. They are simply crying out for attention from the Presidency, hoping that if they make enough noise, they might eventually be invited to the table.

Otherwise, who in their right mind advises a man to strengthen, fund or empower the same people who are plotting his downfall?
That is the equivalent of asking a man to supply bullets to his enemies and then act surprised when those bullets are fired at him.
