A between the lines specialist. My favorite type of #10.

He has the agility to turn quickly in tight spaces, can accelerate play by carrying the ball at speed, and combines brilliantly in one and two touch sequences.

His awareness is exceptional. He constantly scans his surroundings before receiving, allowing him to orient his first touch towards the free space.

He is press-resistant and capable of dropping deep to receive under pressure. Out of possession, he also contributes enormously with his work rate and intelligence in the press.

Injuries have taken away some of the sharpness that once made him a threat attacking in behind. If he can get back to full fitness and stay injury-free, he is the ideal #10.

Many wanted Mikel Merino in that role, but Spain are not England. Spain prioritize central progression, technical quality between the lines, and controlling the game through possession rather than relying on late box arrivals or constant runs in behind.
