"ನಮ್ಮ ರಾಜ್ಯದ ವಿಧಾನಸಭೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಇತ್ತೀಚೆಗೆ ನಡೆದ ಚರ್ಚೆಯನ್ನು ಕೇಳಿ ಮನಸ್ಸಿಗೆ ಅತೀವ ನೋವು ಮತ್ತು ಆಕ್ರೋಶ ಉಂಟಾಗಿದೆ. ಮುಂಬರುವ ಐಪಿಎಲ್ ಪಂದ್ಯಗಳಿಗಾಗಿ ಶಾಸಕರು ಮತ್ತು ಅವರ ಕುಟುಂಬದವರಿಗೆ 'ಉಚಿತ ವಿಐಪಿ ಟಿಕೆಟ್‌' ಬೇಕು ಎಂದು ಪಕ್ಷಭೇದ ಮರೆತು ಹಠ ಹಿಡಿದಿರುವುದು ಎಂತಹ ದುರ್ದೈವ!

ನಮಗೆಲ್ಲಾ ನೆನಪಿರಲಿ, ಕಳೆದ ಬಾರಿ ಆರ್‌ಸಿಬಿ (RCB) ವಿಜಯೋತ್ಸವದ ಸಂಭ್ರಮದ ನಡುವೆ ನಡೆದ ಆ ಭೀಕರ ಕಾಲ್ತುಳಿತದಲ್ಲಿ 11 ಅಮಾಯಕ ಯುವಕರು ಪ್ರಾಣ ಕಳೆದುಕೊಂಡಿದ್ದರು. ಆ ಹನ್ನೊಂದು ಕುಟುಂಬಗಳ ಕಣ್ಣೀರು ಇಂದಿಗೂ ಆರಿಲ್ಲ. ಆ ದುರಂತಕ್ಕೆ ಕಾರಣರಾದ ಆರ್‌ಸಿಬಿ ಮ್ಯಾನೇಜ್‌ಮೆಂಟ್ ಆಗಲಿ ಅಥವಾ ಕೆಎಸ್‌ಸಿಎ (KSCA) ಆಗಲಿ ಇದುವರೆಗೂ ಯಾರನ್ನೂ ಹೊಣೆಗಾರರನ್ನಾಗಿ ಮಾಡಿಲ್ಲ. ಆ ಕುಟುಂಬಗಳಿಗೆ ಕನಿಷ್ಠ ನ್ಯಾಯವೂ ಸಿಕ್ಕಿಲ್ಲ ಎಂಬುದು ವ್ಯವಸ್ಥೆಯ ಅತಿದೊಡ್ಡ ವೈಫಲ್ಯ.

ಜನರ ತೆರಿಗೆ ಹಣದಲ್ಲಿ ಸವಲತ್ತು ಪಡೆಯುವ, ಕೇವಲ ₹1,600 ಬಾಡಿಗೆಗೆ 16 ಎಕರೆ ಸರ್ಕಾರಿ ಭೂಮಿಯನ್ನು ಅನುಭವಿಸುತ್ತಿರುವ ಕೆಎಸ್‌ಸಿಎ ಸಂಸ್ಥೆ, ಸಾಮಾನ್ಯ ಜನರ ಸುರಕ್ಷತೆಯನ್ನು ಗಾಳಿಗೆ ತೂರಿ ಟಿಕೆಟ್ ಹೆಸರಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಲೂಟಿ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಿದೆ. ಇಂತಹ ಸಮಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಜನರ ಪರವಾಗಿ ಧ್ವನಿ ಎತ್ತಬೇಕಾದ ಜನಪ್ರತಿನಿಧಿಗಳು ಕೇವಲ ತಮ್ಮ ವೈಯಕ್ತಿಕ ಸೌಲಭ್ಯಗಳಿಗಾಗಿ ಚರ್ಚಿಸುತ್ತಿರುವುದು ನಾಚಿಕೆಗೇಡಿನ ಸಂಗತಿ.

ಒಬ್ಬ ಯುವಕನಾಗಿ ನಾನು ಕೇಳಬಯಸುತ್ತೇನೆ:

ನಮ್ಮ ಯುವಕರ ಜೀವಕ್ಕಿಂತ ನಮಗೆ ಐಪಿಎಲ್ ಟಿಕೆಟ್‌ಗಳೇ ದೊಡ್ಡದಾದವೇ?

ಸಾಮಾನ್ಯ ಜನರ ರಕ್ತ ಹರಿಸಿ ಕಟ್ಟುವ ಕ್ರೀಡಾಂಗಣದಲ್ಲಿ ಅವರಿಗೆ ಬೆಲೆ ಇಲ್ಲವೇ?

ಉಚಿತ ಟಿಕೆಟ್‌ಗಳು ಬೇಡ, ಆ 11 ಯುವಕರ ಸಾವಿಗೆ ಕಾರಣರಾದವರ ಮೇಲೆ ತಕ್ಷಣ ಕಠಿಣ ಕಾನೂನು ಕ್ರಮವಾಗಲಿ. ಅಧಿಕಾರ ಇರುವುದು ಜನರ ಸೇವೆಗಾಗಿಯೇ ಹೊರತು, ಮೋಜು-ಮಸ್ತಿಗಾಗಿ ಅಲ್ಲ."

Had the Karnataka MLAs spent time in the Vidhana Soudha discussing safety and security preparedness for IPL fans, it would have upheld the dignity of the House.

Instead, we saw MLAs pleading and even threatening for free tickets for themselves and their families.

This is not just poor priority. It exposes a deeper problem - a VIP mindset that sees public office as entitlement.

Why should any sports body owe MLAs anything? Why should elected representatives expect privileges denied to ordinary citizens?

Public office is not a privilege. It is a responsibility.

This culture must end.

The MLA’s statement is wrong. And frankly, not surprising.

First, it exposes their priorities. At a time when real issues of the state demand attention, raising something like this in the Assembly is itself telling.
And if the Speaker chooses to act on it, it diminishes the dignity of the Vidhan Soudha itself.

Now, let’s ask the basic question.

Why should the KSCA, or any sports body, give free tickets to MLAs?

Why should they “owe” them anything?

This is plain entitlement. Feudal thinking.

An MLA demanding free tickets, a separate gallery, and refusing to sit with the public reveals their belief that they are somehow above the very people they represent.

That is the problem.

If citizens have to buy tickets, so should MLAs. Simple.

Unless we call this out clearly, we will keep normalising a culture of entitlement. And that is the opposite of what a modern, equal, democratic society should stand for.

This is wrong. It must be opposed.
