Home-lab may become one of your biggest tech assets for getting into DevOps. I run my home-lab for years and it helped me to start my DevOps career.

It also gives you an environment to practice, learn, break stuff and troubleshoot without a worry and can also be included as a project for your portfolio. Why do I say this?

Well... One of the biggest bottlenecks when learning DevOps and gaining hands on experience(aside from the sheer amount of different tools and technologies) are the resources(servers, network, storage etc).

On another note, cloud may prove to be costly or may also be bottleneck because not all services are in the free tier but still it is enough for starting out.

When you combine all this - it may discourage some people getting into DevOps but itdoes not need to be difficult nor to be expensive.
