There’s been a Raisina Dialogue in Delhi every March since 2016. It’s the brainchild of Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, Narendra Modi’s long-serving foreign minister. Like other global gatherings, it brings together political leaders, senior military commanders, prominent business people, leading journalists, and think tank chiefs to discuss key issues; but it’s better than Davos because it’s not so dominated by politically correct plutocrats; and better than the longer-running Chinese Boao Forum, because it not essentially an exercise in homage to the host government.
I started attending virtually, during the pandemic, and have been there in person since 2022.

India Will Outlast China — Here is Why.
In this video, I take on the myth that authoritarian rule is the key to China’s rise—and show why that narrative is not only wrong, but deeply misleading.
China’s boom began when it turned away from Maoist central planning and embraced market reforms, globalization, and the Western-led global order. Deng Xiaoping didn’t prove that authoritarianism works—he proved it didn’t. Now, under Xi Jinping, that fragile balance is collapsing.
Meanwhile, India—the world’s largest democracy—gets written off because it’s slower. But speed isn’t everything. Resilience is. Democracies can correct themselves. Authoritarian regimes can’t. Just ask Russia. Or Venezuela. Or history.
Under Modi, India's patent applications at the IPO surged from an average of ~40,000 annually during UPA (2004-2014) to over 90,000 in 2023, with resident filings exceeding 50% for the first time per WIPO. Global Innovation Index ranking climbed from 76th in 2014 to 39th in 2024. Scientific publications grew exponentially, positioning India as the third-largest producer worldwide, while absolute R&D spending doubled—evidencing robust progress amid policy focus on self-reliance. Claims of anti-science regress overlook these data-driven gains.

Every arrow I release breaks a barrier, of mindset, of limits, of old labels.
I am proud to have @DeloitteIndia by my side.
This #IndependenceDay, I celebrate freedom from every limit ever placed on me.
