I’m very pro open-source AI, so maybe I’m biased here.
But I really don’t buy the argument that distillation automatically means “stealing IP.”
A model can learn from another model’s outputs. Sure.
But learning some answers is not the same as copying the system that produced them.
You don’t get the full reasoning ability, the internal representations, the context understanding, or the ability to generalize just by collecting outputs.
If learning from a teacher meant copying their brain, everyone who studied Einstein would have become Einstein.
Distillation is real. The technical and legal questions around it are real too.
But sometimes it feels like “IP theft” is becoming a convenient label for something else:
Open models are catching up faster than closed-model companies expected, and their moat is getting smaller.
Someone told me growth on X is rarely a straight line. Sometimes the algorithm forgets you exist, and your job is to keep reminding it.
But as a new account, I don’t think the algorithm has forgotten me. I’m pretty sure it still doesn’t know I exist.
Still, I’ve already learned why consistency matters.
Sometimes consistency means posting with momentum.
Sometimes it means posting without it.
When building your CT account, temporary losses of momentum are completely normal. Was talking about this with a friend the other day.
There will be periods where everything just clicks. You gain followers, make new connections, your content performs well, and ideas come naturally without you even trying too hard.
But sooner or later, you'll also go through periods where the momentum fades. Growth plateaus, you put in a lot of effort, and your posts somehow still flop.
I've been through plenty of those phases myself and while they suck, they're part of the journey.
The important thing is you gotta make it through without quitting
@Brookcalls I guess the hardest part is telling the difference between a strategy that needs adjusting and a good strategy going through a quiet week...
