Starting this Fall (2026-2027 school year), Florida public schools will teach the history of communism, including its documented atrocities, mass famines, gulags, suppression of speech and religion, and the roughly 100 million lives lost under regimes from the Soviet Union and Mao’s China to Cuba, Cambodia, and Venezuela.

This follows 2024 legislation signed by Gov. Ron DeSantis and standards unanimously approved by the State Board of Education in November 2025.

Instruction will be woven into social studies across grades, building on the existing Victims of Communism Day requirement.

This is the right decision.
Students should learn the actual historical record, not sanitized theory or selective nostalgia.

Communist systems consistently produced poverty, secret police, engineered starvation, and totalitarian control while promising equality.

Teaching that record is not “indoctrination”; refusing to teach it is.

Florida is equipping kids with the facts so they can recognize collectivist failures when they reappear under new branding.

Americans keep voting with their feet for places that protect individual liberty, property, and opportunity.

DeSantis put it plainly: the warmth of Florida freedom beats the chill of New York-style collectivism.
