When the armed goons started raiding polling centres with their guzzlers, voters of Kihoto Polling Station decided to act fast and secure their votes.

Initially they had showed up in person to provide human shield but they realized the goons were ready to shoot and kill.

The next option was a barrier. And they placed this tree to ensure no access to vehicles, big or small. This is how plans to rig flopped.

A passenger secretly recorded a phone conversation between two matatu drivers though their sacco is not clear.

The contents of the call offer a glimpse into the underworld operations that fuel much of Nairobi's chaotic "goon life."

You head home in the evening, leaving behind a calm city, only to wake up the next morning to scenes of chaos and destruction, left wondering what unfolded overnight. The driver informs the person on the other end that he has a gig for four matatus — which he refers to as mīcūgi.

The job is scheduled for 1am, specifically saa saba ya usiku, when even the night runners are fast asleep. He instructs the listener to drive straight from Kayole to Mukuru kwa Njenga without picking up any regular passengers along the route.

Their only task is to collect the 'watu wa kazi' from Mukuru kwa Njenga, drop them off in Transami, then return home and act as if nothing ever happened.

All this for Kshs 6,000. The listener appears concerned about security, but the caller brushes it off with a laugh. He assures him that the government has arranged maximum protection, with plenty of police officers (thirikari) and bulldozers on site.

To reassure him further, he recalls the incident at Nyama Villa: "Ninie ndari kuo na thirikari yaihurite kuo" (I was the one who transported the guys and the government was in maximum presence).

By the way, who knows where exactly is Nyama Villa and what happened in the recent past?

All that risk for just Kshs 6,000? One wonders how these drivers feel when they witness the depression and suffering that follow such acts of destruction.

Or is it another G-to-G deal?
