3-times Grammy winner and Indian musician Ricky Kej has published an op-ed criticizing the Grammys' new Best Asian Pop category. He says the category was likely created to recognize acts like BTS, but it fails to achieve genuine global inclusion. Kej explains that artists submitting to the category could lose eligibility for standard genre categories, while Genre Committees can reportedly reassign entries. He argues this creates a system that risks separating Asian artists from mainstream competition rather than including them equally.

Kej also questions the Academy's definition of "Asian Pop," saying it mainly reflects K-pop, J-pop, and C-pop while overlooking the musical traditions of much of Asia. He says he understands BTS' decision to skip the 2027 Grammys and calls on the Recording Academy to expand its international voting membership, give global artists greater representation, and focus on structural reform instead of creating region-based categories.
