๐ฌ Research Spotlight: "Climate justice begins with understanding the structures that shape inequality." - Fadzai Chipato (@zvino)
How do local experiences of displacement connect to the global architecture of climate finance?
During her fellowship at the Academy of International Affairs NRW, Fadzai Chipato explores this question. Building on her research on development-induced displacement and carbon offset schemes in Zimbabwe, she examines how structural inequalities in international climate finance shape trust, accountability, and cooperation between developed countries and Sub-Saharan Africa.
"The fellowship gives me the opportunity to extend my research from the local and national level to the regional and global, examining how the structural asymmetries I observed on the ground connect to the broader architecture of international climate finance."
Fadzai has also found Bonn to be a welcoming place for research:
"Bonn is a wonderfully friendly and intellectually stimulating city. The AIA NRW community has been supportive, well-connected, and has helped make my research visible beyond academic spaces."
We're delighted to have Fadzai in our fellowship community and look forward to the contributions her research will make to debates on climate justice and equitable climate governance.

Remain vigilant following an increase in WhatsApp account takeover incidents.
There are multiple complaints from victims who are being targeted through this method.
Victims are contacted by an individual posing as a known or trusted contact. The individual requests to schedule an online meeting and provides a link.
Once the link is accessed, a verification code is sent to the victimโs phone.
The perpetrator then requests this code under the false pretense that it is required to join the meeting.
After the code is shared, control of the WhatsApp account is taken over.
The suspect then impersonates the victim and sends messages to contacts requesting urgent financial assistance.
Friends and family, believing the request is legitimate, proceed to transfer funds.
The public is urged to exercise extreme caution when receiving unexpected links or requests for verification codes, even from known contacts, as this method is being widely used to compromise accounts and facilitate financial loss.

The reaction to Arsenal losing to Manchester United, compared to Bayern Munich being beaten by Augsburg, says a lot about how football is viewed in the Premier League versus the Bundesliga.
In England, one defeat turns into a full-blown crisis. It becomes a judgement on the manager, the players, the mentality, and even the entire project. In Germany, itโs more often seen for what it is โ a bad day at the office that happens over a long season.
The Premier Leagueโs intensity, media pressure, and constant narrative-building mean perspective gets lost very quickly. Every result is treated like it defines everything that came before and everything that comes next.
Same outcome on paper, big team beaten, completely different reaction. One league panics, the other moves on.
