The Special Investigating Unit (SIU) has completed 90% of its second phase in the investigation of corruption within the National Lotteries Commission (NLC), totaling about R1.4 billion in losses. In a recent update to Parliament, the SIU disclosed new findings, including instances of grant funds being misappropriated for personal gain, involving figures such as actress Moitheri Pheto and actor Presley Chweneyagae.
The investigation uncovered a range of irregularities, from funds being diverted to individuals' personal accounts to the hijacking of a nonprofit organization meant to support impoverished communities.
The SIU has initiated criminal and disciplinary actions against implicated individuals and continues its efforts to recover lost funds, empowered by authorization from President Cyril Ramaphosa and relevant legislation.
