Tennants is holding a kintsugi auction next week to benefit Cancer Research UK.
Kintsugi, as many may know, is the Japanese practice of repairing broken ceramics using urushi lacquer mixed with some kind of metallic dust (often gold). The process is slow, deliberative, and requires skilled hands.
By repairing ceramics this way, the craftsperson highlights — rather than tries to hide — where the item was previously damaged. Many feel that this makes the item look more beautiful. In this way, it's a kind of life lesson: even if things have been broken, they can emerge stronger and more beautiful once repaired, such as relationships or personal trauma.
The auction starts Sept. 7th and runs until the 18th. Proceeds will benefit cancer research.
If you're based in the US and want someone to repair broken ceramics using this technique, I've used Yuko Gunji in New York City and think they do great work.

@dieworkwear Thank you so much for letting people know about this auction. Although in the UK, it is open to everyone, including the States! Please contact @nmckintsugi on instagram if you want to know more… or Tennants directly. Really appreciate the support.
