⚠️ ATTENTION: Do not underestimate Storm #Marta!
The Portuguese people are not being sufficiently warned about what’s coming. Recent model guidance has been adjusting to newer data and I expect Marta to continue intensifying up until landfall tomorrow.
NOTE: I don’t expect this storm to be as severe as Kristin, but a storm doesn’t need to be historic to be dangerous. As most of you know, Portugal and Spain remain in a very critical situation with severe flooding unfolding. Marta will not only bring widespread *heavy* rain but the continued intensification suggests a risk of very strong winds.
It’s still unclear exactly what areas will be affected by the worst winds, but it’s reasonable to expect the strongest gusts across central and southern Portugal and also in parts of the north, especially wherever the center of the storm makes landfall. There is a possibility of particularly strong winds in excess of 120-130 km/h near the core of the storm.
Trees and power lines will be more prone to fall with soils continuing to be deeply saturated.
In summary:
Please prepare for widespread disruptive winds and further heavy rainfall exacerbating the ongoing flood crisis.
Thank you for reading and be sure to share this information! The more people that know what’s coming, the better.
Extreme rain in Portugal again!
In the next 10 days, up to 500 liters per square meter of rain will come here. This means that in total it has rained more than 1000 liters here this year - that's far more than in Vienna all year.
If you are in Portugal and Spain, I made a special graphic for the situation in the next 1-2 weeks. Share, repost, do what you can to get the word out.
Severe flash flooding and river flooding will affect more communities in the days ahead as we remain under a nearly non-stop spell of rain carried by a series of storms.
Hundreds of millimeters of rain are still to come, with totals getting as high as 300-500+ mm in central/northern Portugal and parts of Galicia.
To repeat, this is *additional* rainfall… on top of everything that has already fallen over the past several weeks. In addition to a major flood risk, some of these storms will bring strong winds, lightning, and bouts of hail. Cleanup efforts will be affected in areas violently struck by #Kristin.
This winter is no joke. Prepare accordingly.
🇵🇹 Portugal is a quite an odd culture because you'd expect it to be close to Spain or other Southern European cultures but in many ways it's more like a weird echo-ey mishmash of dictatorial trauma
Portugal had one of the longest lasting dictatorship in Europe and for 48 years a dictator named Salazar ruled it (from 1926-1974) longer even than Franco in Spain or Mussolini in Italy!
Salazar essentially did a Cultural Revolution like Mao did in China but onto the Portuguese, completely wiping out its historical identity and resetting it through fear and control
What was the Portuguese original culture before Salazar? It was in many ways the exact opposite of today. Portuguese culture was creative, radical, risk taking, vibrant and revolutionary. Lisbon was full of artists, writers, political radicals, anarchists and bohemians. Lisbon was full of utopian dreams, wild ideology, and cultural experimentation. TL;DR it was very free thinking and revolutionary
So revolutionary that around ~1910, Portugal had 45 governments in 16 years, and the military dictatorship by Salazar was an extreme response to that by shutting down any free thought or wild ideas
Instead dictator Salazar engineered a completely new culture: one that made the Portuguese people easy to control, passive and obedient, through censorship, fear, surveillance, and anti-modernism. A new culture of fatalism, fear of ambition, and emotional restraint
To promote this new identity, Salazar used the Three F's: Futebol, Fado e Fátima (football, Fado music, and religion):
Salazar popularized football in Portugal as a way to depoliticize and pacify the population. If they'd all just follow a national sport, and fight for there teams, they'd be distracted and there'd be less chance of rebelling
Similarly Salazar popularized Fado, a traditional type of Portuguese music that is exceptionally sad, nostalgic and well just depressing, to pacify Portuguese further: playing it non-stop on the state-controlled radio. It helped keep the Portuguese sad and nostalgic, again so they wouldn't rebel
Finally, Salazar used religious propaganda, by heavily promoting the 1917 appearance of Virgin Mary in a city called Fatima in Portugal, and popularizing pilgrimages to there. The Virgin Mary sighting was framed as divine warnings against Communism which was a threat for Salazar
Remember: none of these passive obedient traits had anything to do with the original Portuguese before Salazar came into power. The Portuguese were radical and risk taking! I mean they sailed the entire globe setting up trade outposts all the way from Brazil to Japan. You don't do that if you have fear of ambition or are risk averse
That's literally why the Portuguese of 2025 still have a highly hierarchical, obedient, rule-obsessed, risk-averse and fatalistic culture, which Salazar engineered on purpose to keep the Portuguese people under control. And he managed to do that for almost 50 years!
This is NOT the true Portuguese culture though, it was hyper-engineered by a dictator, and every day I see the legacy of a horrible dictator that managed to wipe out one of the most beautiful cultures in the world
If anything, I hope to see the pre-Salazarian culture of the Portuguese make a revival where people are creative, radical, vibrant, free thinking and risk taking again!
Excluding covid losses and recovery, Biden’s added over 2x as many auto industry jobs as Trump.
No doubt about which party has done more to help the auto industry.

Instead of dialogue and diplomacy being deployed to end the nuclear threat, another nuclear arms race is taking shape.
We need to stop the madness before it’s too late.
The only way to eliminate the nuclear threat is to eliminate nuclear weapons.

Quando, nos próximos dias, começarem a olhar para o recibo de vencimento deste mês, não se esqueçam que 80% dessa subida do vosso salários por corte de IRS se deve a António Costa e que os restantes 20% se devem a Pedro Nuno Santos.
Dear @antoniocostapm we will miss your good humour and problem-solving skills — very handy during the 74 summits you participated in. #EUCO
