Yesterday, on behalf of Minister Julie Dabrusin, I was pleased to make three important announcements that will help protect Lake Winnipeg and strengthen Canada’s approach to freshwater stewardship.

As the city at the outlet of Lake Winnipeg and the heart of its watershed, Winnipeg has a direct stake in the lake’s future. That’s why protecting and restoring Lake Winnipeg is so important for our environment, our economy, and future generations.

We announced the launch of public engagement on Canada’s first-ever National Water Security Strategy, giving Canadians an opportunity to help shape a long-term vision for protecting our freshwater resources and ensuring communities, ecosystems, and industries remain resilient in a changing climate.

We also announced more than $2.8 million for 16 partner-led projects through the Lake Winnipeg Freshwater Ecosystem Initiative. These projects will help reduce nutrient loading, improve water quality, advance scientific research and monitoring, and support Indigenous leadership in freshwater stewardship.

Finally, we announced the extension of the Canada-Manitoba Memorandum of Understanding Respecting Lake Winnipeg and the Lake Winnipeg Basin through 2031, reaffirming our shared commitment to protecting and restoring one of Manitoba’s most important natural treasures.

Lake Winnipeg is at the heart of our region’s identity, environment, and economy. By bringing together governments, Indigenous partners, researchers, watershed organizations, and local communities, we are taking meaningful action to protect the lake, strengthen freshwater science, and ensure a healthier future for generations to come.

As the Government of Canada’s Special Advisor for Water, I was very pleased to announce today that we are investing more than 2.3 million dollars over the next two years in 17 partner-led projects to improve freshwater management with a focus on protecting Lake Winnipeg.

Projects will support reducing nutrient pollution and enhancing collaboration and partnerships, while strengthening meaningful participation of Indigenous Peoples in freshwater stewardship.
