The extent of anti-Americanism and Trump Derangement Syndrome displayed by a sizable proportion of the Canadian population reminds me of the mass psychosis of the COVID years. For Carney to make a deal with Trump would have been akin to ending all COVID measures in late 2020 or early 2021. Political suicide.
Kant’s central claim was that the noumenal world is unknowable. On principle. The phenomenal world, the world of appearances, is structured by categories of understanding and forms of sensibility. It can give us knowledge of physical science, especially mathematics. Anything that falls beyond this, any claims of value, freedom, morality, purpose or any other claim derived from experience is unknowable. These areas are only subject to personal preferences, we cannot say one thing is better than any other.
The basis of this claim was Kant’s true observation that some features of reality are inaccessible because the structure of our experience is constrained by our perceptual organs. No organism can see, hear or touch everything e.g. we cannot see infra red light or hear ultrasounds. But that does not mean they are unknowable. And Kant does not prove that.
Kant’s philosophy was the epistemological cornerstone of the Enlightenment. It has led to the demotion of all non-scientific to mere personal preferences or opinions; we cannot say freedom is better than tyranny or that murder is bad. All we can say is that we prefer a free, non-murderous society, but not that our preference is true.
Ultimately, everything depends on reality. Philosophy’s role is to show that we can (or can’t) know reality that is independent of our consciousness. Aristotle said correctly there is an independent reality that we can know. Kant said there isn’t. There is “my truth” and “your truth”. Reality and truth are subjective. Anyone can know their reality, but not reality as such.
@ChristianHeiens The most realistic scenario is that men will also lose the right to vote. That is acceptable to me. As long as women lose their right to vote I will gladly renounce mine.
@ChristianHeiens A very substantial minority of liberals believe assassination is a legitimate tool to settle political differences. Democracy cannot function in this kind of environment. The republicans cannot cede executive power again. It will be a bloodbath.
@martianwyrdlord Or the Roman revolution. America is and can continue to be the spearhead of Western civilization just as Rome once was even after it ceased being a Republic.
I hear you, but I’m not so sure.
Thieves and fraudsters can only operate if there something honest people have produced they can steal. The left does not create anything, they only destroy. A country can only survive if the left is kept at bay. The U.S. is still in a position where good people can prevail in elections if elections are fair. For many other Western countries, e.g. Spain, that option no longer exists.
