I wrote a blog post discussing some weird details surrounding Touhou Koumakyou: New Classic.
Do you want to learn the truth behind the translators and the source code of the new game? Is ZUN following the law?
Please check it out!

Vertriebsrechte“, ja nee, is' klar.

You know, I've actually always wondered if the PC-98 games actually belong to ZUN or if they technically belong to Amusement Makers, the video game circle he was part of in University. Cause the PC-98 games are posted on their site.

@Pu1s3Sergey They came with a list of languages they wanted to support and didn't allow to add new ones.
As for Thcrap support, we don't know the structure of the exe and internal files, so it might take a lot of work depending on how complex it will be.

@aggressive2hu Very important detail: I just got clarification that they're indeed collaborating with individual *translators*, who give the translations *to* them, rather than just taking the translations *from* thpatch.
Which cleverly bypasses the license of the page itself…

@aggressive2hu With built-in translations into 10 languages taken from Touhou Patch Center.
Let's hope they properly credit them and don't violate the CC-BY-SA 4.0 license on the translations, and then it would be the first main series release actually worth paying for.

@aggressive2hu …no matter whether they ultimately get credited or not.
Though the translation manager is said to be a nice guy, so it sure looks as if it'll all turn out well.

@aggressive2hu … tiny, widely documented by fans, and overlap with the current ZUN engine they probably also had access too.
And the rest of the old code is so Windows-native that it wouldn't have helped at all with what they're doing here.
@aggressive2hu In any case, the old bugs will most definitely be gone. The fact that they're porting it to Switch and PS5 *must* mean that it's a new engine. Whether ZUN "found the original code" or not is irrelevant.
The game logic parts they *could* have reused from the original code are…

@aggressive2hu The community outrage surrounding the release was nice to watch. But then it just died down and nothing came out of it, so it wasn't even the best thing at a meta level.
📝 Wrote a post about the various strategies of porting PC-98 Touhou to modern platforms! Also clears up common misconceptions about the performance of the PC-98 originals.
This one is required reading for anyone who wants to see these games ported.

@CptGrandDad These shows have been going on for at least 15 years. In 2010/2011, I wondered why nobody bothered to translate them.
Now, I'm certain that Japanese speakers back then knew that there was nothing of value to be learned from these shows. Wisdom lost to the ages, it seems…
