Loneliness is more likely to cause depression if one keeps ruminating on how lonely they are, HKU scientists have shown. The research team was led by Professor Tatia M.C. Lee, Director of the State Key Laboratory of Brain and Cognitive Sciences, Chair Professor of Psychological Science and Clinical Psychology and May Professor in Neuropsychology at HKU. The researchers applied network analysis to a sample of 900 adults in China during the #Covid19 #pandemic. They found that ruminating on the feeling of loneliness was the key underlying factor that modulated the loneliness-depression relationship. The results were published in Nature Mental Health. The researchers suggest that depression treatment therapies should target the link between frequently feeling lonely and ruminating on loneliness, in order to deactivate the network of loneliness, rumination, and depression.
