Abandonment must not be the final stage of extraction https://t.co/KpriOS8YwA via @EcoHomef
HOMEF calls for the decommissioning of hazardous infrastructure, cleaning up pollution, restoring ecosystems, and strengthening communities to pursue a future beyond extractivism.
The Executive Director, Health of Mother Earth Foundation (HOMEF), Dr Nnimmo Bassey, says environmental degradation is now a growing national concern.
Bassey said this in an interview on the sidelines of HOMEF’s School of Ecology programme on Tuesday, September 22, 2026, in Lagos. https://t.co/fO9TceLVYn via EnviroNews

This is the uncomfortable truth we must confront: Africa cannot afford an energy transition that simply replaces one form of extraction with another.
Renewable energy must not become a new scramble for African land, minerals, water and labour, while the value, technology and profits leave the continent.
The transition must be just, locally owned, value-adding and people-centred. Africa should not move from fossil-fuel dependency to green dependency.
Clean energy without justice is not a just transition.
Renewables deployed without community ownership just repeat the same old supply chain. We need models where value and decisions stay local. This is our collective work. What would that look like in your community?
“Reading the World” is a remarkable new documentary about Paulo Freire, the acclaimed Brazilian educator whose revolutionary approach to teaching connected literacy to critical thinking and democratic participation. “One of the most important points of his philosophy is that everyone has knowledge,” says Maria Luisa Mendonça, a consulting producer for the documentary.
Renewable energy shift may lead to neocolonialism, Nnimmo Bassey warns https://t.co/iwKRz36fIN
He faulted arguments that African countries should continue using fossil fuels because the West industrialised through them, likening it to continuing to take from a buffet “when the table itself is already on fire.”
Tracing modern extraction to slavery, plantation agriculture and colonial trade, Bassey asked what happens when land, water, forests and human bodies are turned into commodities.
37 Deaths In Niger Mining: HOMEF Demands End To Destructive Extractivism https://t.co/x9yZy1NHJe via @Forefront_NG
Nigeria must stop treating extraction as the pathway to development while ignoring the lives, lands and ecosystems sacrificed in the process. Bassey said; “Whether it is oil, gold or critical minerals, an economic model that destroys the ecological foundations of life cannot be the future we seek.
Minna: Death of over 30 Youth In Detention Must Be Investigated
The Nigerian authorities must immediately set up an independent investigation of today’s death of over 30 youth — including minors — in the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Minna Niger state. The victims were arrested on September 15 and 16, 2026 at mining sites located at M.I. Wushishi/Lukoto axis of Minna. This loss of lives cannot go unanswered.
Government must promptly, thoroughly, independently, impartially, transparently, and effectively, investigate how detention for one to two days descended into a disaster that killed minors. Those who are found to be behind this tragedy must not merely receive internal or administrative sanctions. They must face the full scale of justice.
The circumstances of the arrests of the victims and the condition in which they were detained must be established transparently. Victims and their families must be provided with access to justice and effective remedies.
The authorities must ensure justice for the victims of this horrific yet preventable incident which cost so many people, many believed to be children, their lives.
